Graham Clark talks to Grade One-winning jockey Bryony Frost concerning her profession and the forthcoming season.
She won the conditional jockeys championship last season, hit the headlines with Frodon at Cheltenham in March and has emerged as one of the most talked-about youthful riders in the game, so listening to Bryony Frosts views on racing and life in general is fun and enlightening:
You simply can not represent that sort of sense after you cross the line. You dont know where the point is, but then heads start to disappear and all I have is Frodons earsflat again, his mane into my head and all Ive seen is just a blur of green and someplace theres the line and that is all were heading to. You cross it and also the entire world just disappears for a second. You do not acknowledge how courageous hes been and where youre, what race it is is him. It was a joyful moment – that is the main feeling that came across.
We stopped for a burger and a coke and I had a note on such car that stated,we saw it on the telly, which was class, things like that. They took the time to compose a notice, although I havent got a clue who they were. You here some wicked stories. If I will let people in my world just a little bit and see how I view these guys and also the main reason why Im doing it, that is mega for me personally. We live to produce.
Its the Gold Cup. I recall watching him before with Victoria (Pendleton) thinking Id just like to ride him because hes your older chap at like six oclock in the day – this is like his metaphor for man – he would have his whiskey in six, sat in a huge armchair and hed just place the world to rights. That was him and he just looked after me the whole way around. This was a mega day and that I thought it likely would not get better than that.
I would not be here saying that Ive won Grade OnesI wouldnt have been put into any kind of limelight when it wasnt for Paul and him giving me that the help along with his associates. They have been like a second family here. From being under the wing of those my riding has improved.
As a jockey, your job is to improve your horses profession, thats what youre used to do and thats the reason why you love the job, because each single time you sit on a horse, if youve got a one-litre engine or a V8, youre trying to make him the best he can be.
Ive always done . I have never attempted to design myself on anybody or copy anyone. I try to find out from anyone and everyone – youve got to create a sponge. To any kid in life hoping to do anything, youve got to attempt to surround yourself with individuals that are good at their jobs. Surround yourself with champions if youd like to be close to the very top.
To come to Sandown (for the previous day of this year ) was a big moment for me, I had been on 49 winners – I actually would have loved to get to 50. We understood we had the name in the bag, which was completed so everyone came to say we have a got a fiver on you and Black Corton and I was just likeOK but he came straight back on tune. He put me back on cloud nine ahead and gave me the very best twist of my life. I owe a lot to him and it was mega to find the title.
Ive always believed its opinions that will prevent you at the days close. They are not reality, and therefore you dont need to listen to them. For me, if you are good enough, you will find the chances. Paul does not offer rides because Im a woman to me , hopefully he gives me rides since I try hard and execute my directions and do. That is the sole reason , not because of who I am. It can not change, Im a woman, thats me.
(A journalist) called me up and wanted to do a meeting, and his first question was, girls struggle since theyre not as powerful as men and my hackles went up instantly. I said,I will give a believer to you and request that you speak to me. He was somewhat bemused, but saidall right. I said, you have got a rugby player and a leading jockey, so name me a soccer player, he did, and I said, title me a leading jockey and he saidDicky (Richard) Johnson, because hes our best one. I said OK, they are likely to deadlift today, whos going to raise the weight and he said,of course, the rugby player, so I asked why he said, because he is stronger. I said, straight right line for a mile, who do you think will be tired by the end of this and were going to put them on a horse? . The rugby player was explained by him since he doesnt know how to ride a horse and that I asked, whys thathe ummed and ahhed for a minute and said,it is approach. And I said, well, I just answered your question and set down the phone .
